Five Greene County High School staff members started the holiday break with Marine-style haircuts as a fundraiser to repair the modified van of colleague Charlie Hane.
The student body watched as Chad Morton, Heath Telleen, Dean Lansman, Kyle Kinne and Charlie Hane were administered buzz cuts by Morton’s mother Carole, now of Jefferson, and school custodian Brenda Miller.
The project began in November when staff and students voted with money to select a male staffer to have his legs shaved by the school secretaries. Physical education teacher Richard Beeler was the “winner” that time, with more than $1,200 going in the voting jars.
In the spirit of the day, Morton jumped up on the stage and announced that if that amount was doubled before Christmas break, he’d shave his head. Telleen, Kinne and Lansman agreed to do the same.
Donation jars were put at all the schools and progress was reported. The amount was more than doubled, with another $1,500 added.
The fundraiser was organized by office staff Misty Bettey and Jacque Cunningham.
